71 YEARS OF CELEBRATING A STRONG CARIBBEAN PRESENCE IN THE UK AT THE WEST INDIAN CULTURAL CENTRE,
9 Clarendon Rd, London N8 0DJ
In the 1940s and 1950s, many of the immigrants who came to Britain from the West Indies settled in Brixton and have continued to contribute to its electric, eclectic, multi-cultural feel ever since.
It has been rumoured that Brixton was chosen as a destination for immigrants as many of the first wave were initially housed in temporary lodgings in a large underground bunker at Stockwell and in the Clapham South Deep Air Raid Shelter, before being dispersed to areas where they were needed.
Wellness edutainment programme for the whole family. Come along on the day and find out more about this fascinating time in British modern history
