Inspired by award-winning Barbadian author Austin Clarke’s book ‘Pigtails & Breadfruit‘ this is an interactive workshop with ingredients to explore and activities to do. You are invited to share your stories as we find out if you know your ‘Stagaback’ from your ‘Bustamante Backbone’, from your ‘Ticky Ticky’? Or even what 25 grams of Plantain looks like as part of your 5 a-day… Could you use Cassava to make starch for your crochet with enough left over to make some ‘Bammy’ for your fish? Speakers on the day include:
Rose Sinclair is a Design Lecturer (Textiles) at Goldsmiths, London. Her current work explores the relationship between textiles and food knowledge and practices. Whilst her PHD research focuses on black women, their crafting practices, and how migration changes how we use cloth.
Barbara Gray is founder and CEO of social enterprise “Urban Dandelion” and newly appointed Mayoress of Lewisham and Advisor on Health Inequalities. She has a focus on storytelling and a passion for reminiscing with our elders.
Come and join us on a food journey as we share and exchange food stories from different perspectives, times and understanding. We’ll learn about the importance ingredients played in the past, as well as our current diets and stories of us and who we are.
